Nature has not designed man to be a solitary creature. Instead, he is made as a social specie, a creature that needs others just like him to continue to thrive and remain existent. Most of the people today seemed to have conveniently forgotten about this. They keep more to themselves and are not entirely open to meeting new people, thinking that they should stick on their goal to get to the top.

Today, people give more importance to material possessions and regard everything according to its monetary equivalent. Relationships between families and friends are put upon strains, as more and more people become fixated about becoming the best, regardless of whatever it takes. What most of these ruthless dreamers fail to realize is that success is nothing is you have not got anybody to share it with. This is also one of the main reasons why rich folks often give out to sickle cell charities for kids to feel happy and contented, even for a short while.

For those who are not aware, sickle cell disease is a type of blood ailment. It is a form of anemia wherein the red blood cells found in the bloodstream does not take on a normal circular form, but an abnormal sickle shape instead. Due to this weird shape, the cells can get stuck in the veins, depriving a certain part of the oxygen it needs.

This disease is caused by an abnormal formation, brought about by a defective gene. This defective gene can be handed down from offspring to offspring. The one who possesses the said gene still produces the normal cells, along with the defective ones.

The disease does not only deprive the parts of the body with oxygen and cause them to rot, it also plays the host to more unwanted illnesses who will inevitably come visit. Hyposplenism, the ailment characterized by the malfunction of the spleen, will cause the immune system to drop. This exposes the patient to an even greater risk of bacterial infections.

These infections can even have adverse effects to the bone. Most SCA patients develop osteomyelitis, a bone infection which lists salmonella as its main cause. Aside from osteomyelitis, ischaemia can also manifest itself, almost often followed by vascular necrosis that hits the joints as well as the hips.

With all the additional suffering, having SCA will not eat up on your physical being, but also on your budget. This and a lot of other life threatening illnesses will require constant medical assistance at all times. This does not come cheap, too, even if the patient has insurance and benefits. Once the funds come dry, people then seek out the help of charities.

As benefactor, sharing what you have redefines your sense of purpose. This is why those who donate a lot become volunteers, too. It is found out that those who help out have better self esteem and lesser bouts of depression as compared to those who do not.

It does not do well only for your soul, too. Physical and mental well being is improved when one is giving to charities. Self esteem also benefits from acts of volunteerism.
